Watson, Watt or Macwatt are names derived from “Wat”, a diminutive of “Walter”, and were common as baptismal names throughout Britain. Walter was originally a Germanic forename derived from “walt” (meaning “rule”) and “heri” (meaning “army”. Watson (son of Walter) is found the most frequently and it is the 20th most common name in Scotland. There were Watson landowners in lowland Scotland as early as the 14th century. The name Watson is first recorded in Edinburgh in 1392.
